Edward Bytheway and Jane (Causer) Humphreys Following is the story of our ancestors Edward Bytheway, born 21 March 1841 in Bilson, Staffordshire, England and Jane (Causer) Humphreys, born 5 July 1844 in England. Jane was born in Greencroft, Bilston, Staffordshire, and still living there at the time of the 1851 and 1861 censuses. The slight changes to her birth date, unfortunately, conflict with her headstone. But, this is quite common in the case of immigration.
Joseph Bytheway, birth registered in the 1st quarter of 1868, Barnsley District (Yorkshire West Riding), and death registered the 3rd quarter, 1868, same district.
Edward and Jane's neighbors Ruben & Ann Humphreys, from England (Anna in England) emigrated separately in 1868 and he naturalized (as Reuben Robert Humphreys) at Suitor's Station, Westmoreland County 30 Sep 1874. Reuben may be an older cousin to Jane. He was born 1831 in Bilston, the son of Job & Mary Humphreys. Edward left from Liverpool, steerage, ship’s manifest ##903336 20 July 1869 on the "City of London" ship bound for New York. A year later, Jane left on 27 June
1870 on the "SS Idaho" with Sarah (7), Elizabeth (5), Edward (3) and
Joseph (toddler). Our grandpa Edward Bytheway was at the ripe age of 3 years
old for this journey. Note that Joseph [aka Joseph William] was 10 months old at that time in 1870. More data indicates Joseph at 8m 28d when they arrived in Philadelphia (27 June 1870), and 9m 11d, when they were enumerated (11 Jul 1870). Not only did Jane travel from England to New York with her children also on the manifest was Ann Humphrey (25) traveling with an infant, Jeff. This might help understand how Jane was able to handle 4 children during the ship cruise, she had help and was traveling together with Ann(a). According to David Bytheway (in England), Edward left before Jane and stayed with his brother, Benjamin, in Philadelphia. Jane. stayed with John and Harriet Rhodes (Jane's aunt and uncle). Samuel & Harriet Rhodes were witnesses at the marriage of their niece, Jane (Humphries) Causer and Edward Bytheway on 22 Dec 1861. Edward must have never met his new-born baby Joseph who traveled with Jane (Jun 1870). Jane must have been pregnant when Edward left for NY. The infant Joseph must have been about 4 months old on the passenger list manifest and apparently didn't survive past 1879, when the second Joseph was born in 1880. The manifest typically showed children's age over one year old. Shane Bytheway reports that the grave of Edward and Jane in Irwin Penn has a small tombstone that says "baby". He was always told that that was for Charles and Ida Mae Bytheway's baby girl. Probably is since most people back then didn't prepay for plots but then it would seem from all indications that the Bytheway minors were fairly well-off.
They migrated to Oakmont, Pennsylvania and were baptized at the St Thomas Episcopal Church on 11 May 1879. The two families, Ruban & Anna Humphreys, Edward & Jane Bytheway were living door to door in Washington County, PA, and both went to Westmoreland County by 1880. Edward and Jane had several more children in Pennsylvania,
By 1880, the census shows them living in the Greensburg area of Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. More children
The family were members of the Christ Episcopal Church in Greensburg, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. By 1900, the family had relocated to Sewickley, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. Edward died in 1904, but Jane did not stay unmarried very long. She remarried to James Daniels (born about 1857), a widower himself on 24 November 1909 at the Christ Episcopal Church in Greensburg. Jane was 64 years old when she married James. The 1910 US Census shows that James had 2 children, Phoebe Daniels (21) and James Daniels (16) still living at home in North Huntingdon, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. It is also suspected that Phoebe Daniels is the daughter of Jane's son Edward.
Pennsylvania Church and Town Records, 24 November 1909 Appears that they knew each other through the Christ Episcopal Church and their friendship together made sense to get married. Jane died when she was 75 years old in 1920. Both Edward and Jane are buried in theUnion Cemetery in Irwin, PA.
Following are pictures of the Edward and Jane Bytheway family Bible. This book was inherited by George John Bytheway which has been kept it in their family.
Edward & Jane Humphrey Marriage Certificate 1861 The following entry recognizes that Mrs. Daniels and Mrs. Bytheway are one in the same.
