Emma (Bytheway) Sarfield

Emma (Bytheway) Sarsfield is the sister of our grandfather, Edward Bytheway. Charles Henry Bytheway was the younger brother.

Emma was married twice, first to Thomas Loughner (born Mar 1873) and had a child, Clarence Loughner (born Jul 1899 in Irvin, PA). Thomas died in 1904 and Emma married Christopher Sarsfield (born 25 Jan 1877) and had James Sarsfield (1906), Emma Sarsfield (1908), Teressa Sarsfield (1911) and Robert Sarsfield (1915).

Charles Henry Bytheway was a minor whose wife died at a very young age. Unable to properly care for his children he placed them under the care of his older sister, Emma (Bytheway) Sarsfield. As with most families of the day, Charles' oldest son, Charles (Chuck) Bytheway would be called on to lend his hand in support of his siblings. Charles' second son, Roy, did what he could to support his siblings as well but Herbert and Floyd were to young to be of much more than domestic help. This assistance would be returned when Emma was elderly was provided room and board by Herbert Bytheway. In the 1930 census, looks like several generations were living together in the same household.

Edward helped Emma buy a house and Emma supposedly paid him back in full.  This happens more often than we would like to admit, but two years before Edward Charles Bytheway died in 1950, he signed property over to his brother, John G. Bytheway and his wife who took title without inquiring from  his sister, Mrs. Emma (Bytheway) Sarsfield as to her rights

Originally Edward Bytheway sold the property to Emma, but in his later years most likely forgot and fell victim to his brother and was convinced to sign it over to him.  Census records showed that Emma continued to live in the house.

Shane Bytheway provided the letter below and stated:

I do not know a lot about Christopher Sarchfield and Emma Bytheway Sarchfield except that they readily took in my Great Grandfather, Charles after his wife, Ida Mae Fear Bytheway died (1920-1930) and their four sons. All the boys were working as miners and eventually became soldiers and sailors in the 1940's. Charles and Ida lived with Edward Bytheway in Saltsburg, Pa when Floyd Russell Bytheway was born 1917-1918.
